American Efficiency Services Assists Hawaiian Electric Resolve Waterbox Modification Leakage to Return Unit to Service

April, 2005 – American Efficiency Services, LLC (AES), the nation’s leading leak detection company, identified the exact sources of condenser/waterbox stud leakage at Hawaiian Electric’s Waiau Unit 3.

The waterboxes were recently upgraded during a recent outage. Upon initial start-up the hotwell condensate sodium levels were elevated. A leaking condenser tube was suspected of providing the contamination. When the unit was removed from service and the condenser flooded to identify the exact source of leakage water was identified protruding from several waterbox studs.

AES established a procedure to specifically inspect each stud to determine the integrity of each individual stud. The exact source of leakage was identified and procedures were developed by Heat Exchanger Systems, Hawaiian Electric and AES to eliminate the leakage. Once the new procedures were implemented and the unit returned to service the leakage from the waterbox studs and flange were confirm to be eliminated by conducting a condenser air inleakage inspection. Also, the condenser tube bundles were inspected with two plugs identified as leaking. The two plugs were replaced and all condensate contamination was eliminated.
